Boat Insurance
A homeowners policy covers small boats to a low limit and stops there. Anything with real value, real speed, or real liability exposure needs its own policy.
- Hull, liability, and on-water towing in one policy
- Trailer and storage covered, not just time on the water
- Navigational limits explained before you leave them

What a boat insurance policy actually does
-
Hull and machinery
Physical damage to the boat, motor, and permanently attached equipment from collision, grounding, fire, or storm.
-
Liability
Injuries and property damage you cause on the water, including damage to docks and other vessels.
-
On-water towing
Getting a disabled boat back to shore. A single tow can cost more than a year of the coverage that pays for it.
-
Uninsured boater
Injuries caused by an operator with no coverage. Boat insurance is not mandatory in many states, which makes this more relevant than it sounds.
-
Trailer and transport
Damage to the trailer and to the boat while being towed on the road.
-
Fuel spill liability
Statutory cleanup liability after a fuel discharge, which can be substantial and is not intuitive to most owners.
-
Wear, osmosis, and marine growth
Gradual deterioration of the hull is maintenance.
-
Operating outside navigational limits
Policies define where the boat is covered. Going beyond that boundary can void coverage for the trip.
Boat Insurance questions
Does my homeowners policy already cover my boat?
Typically only small, low-powered boats and only to a limited amount, with minimal liability. Anything larger needs its own policy.
What are navigational limits?
The geographic area the policy covers: a set of waters, a distance from shore, or a defined coastal range. Trips outside it are not covered.
Am I covered in winter storage?
Usually yes, and some carriers offer a reduced lay-up rate for the months the boat is out of the water.
Does the operator's experience matter?
Yes. Boating safety certification and documented experience frequently reduce premium and are sometimes required for larger vessels.
