Tire Hazard Protection Plan
Hitting a pothole and ruining a tyre is not a comprehensive claim and not a collision claim. On a standard auto policy it is simply your problem.
- Covers the road hazard damage auto policies exclude
- Repair or replacement depending on the damage
- No insurance claim and no deductible on most plans

What a tire hazard protection plan policy actually does
-
Puncture repair
Nails, screws, and glass punctures repaired where the damage is within the repairable area of the tread.
-
Tyre replacement
Replacement when the damage cannot be safely repaired: sidewall damage, in particular, is never repairable.
-
Pothole and debris damage
The most common road hazard claim there is, and the one drivers are most surprised is otherwise uncovered.
-
Mounting and balancing
The labour that comes with replacement, which is a meaningful share of the total cost.
-
Wheel damage
Included on some plans, and worth confirming: alloy wheels are expensive and pothole damage frequently affects both tyre and rim.
-
Normal tread wear
Tyres wearing out is maintenance. Plans typically require a minimum remaining tread depth.
-
Damage from vandalism or collision
Those are insurance claims, not road hazard events.
-
Off-road and competition use
Excluded, as on most vehicle plans.
Tire Hazard Protection Plan questions
Does my auto insurance cover a pothole-damaged tyre?
Usually not in any practical sense. Tyre-only damage from road hazards is generally excluded, and where collision might apply, the deductible typically exceeds the cost.
Are all four tyres covered?
Yes on most plans, subject to the number of replacements allowed in the plan term.
Is there a tread depth requirement?
Almost always. A tyre already near the wear limit is usually excluded, since replacement at that point is maintenance.
Can I use my own tyre shop?
Plans differ. Some reimburse any shop, others require a network. Worth confirming before the flat rather than during it.
This is not an insurance policy
A tire hazard protection plan is a service plan, not insurance. It provides the repair and replacement services described in the plan documents, does not pay claims, and does not provide any vehicle liability or physical damage coverage.
