Telemedicine Plans
A telemedicine plan is a membership, not insurance. It buys unlimited access to a licensed clinician for the conditions that do not need an in-person exam.
- Typically no per-visit charge after the membership fee
- Useful alongside a high-deductible health plan
- Household coverage on most plans, not per person

What a telemedicine plans policy actually does
-
Virtual consultations
Phone or video access to a licensed clinician, usually within minutes to hours rather than days.
-
Common acute conditions
Colds, sinus infections, rashes, pink eye, urinary tract infections, and similar complaints that can be assessed without an examination room.
-
Prescriptions where appropriate
Clinicians can prescribe when clinically appropriate, subject to state law and to restrictions on controlled substances.
-
Household access
Most plans cover everyone in the household under a single fee rather than charging per person.
-
Behavioural health
Some plans include counselling sessions, usually with a separate visit allowance.
-
Emergencies
Chest pain, difficulty breathing, serious injury, and stroke symptoms need emergency care, not a video call.
-
Anything requiring physical examination or imaging
A virtual visit cannot set a bone, take a culture, or run an x-ray.
-
It is not health insurance
A telemedicine plan does not satisfy any coverage requirement and does not pay hospital or specialist bills.
Telemedicine Plans questions
Is this a replacement for health insurance?
No, and it should never be treated as one. It handles routine complaints inexpensively; it does nothing about a hospital admission or a serious diagnosis.
Why use it if I already have a health plan?
On a high-deductible plan, an office visit is often paid entirely out of pocket. A membership with no per-visit charge frequently costs less than two such visits a year.
Can they prescribe antibiotics?
When clinically appropriate, yes. Controlled substances are restricted, and rules vary by state.
Do I need to be at home to use it?
No. These plans work anywhere in the country, which makes them useful while travelling.
This is not an insurance policy
A telemedicine plan is a membership program, not insurance. It does not satisfy any state or federal health coverage requirement, does not pay medical claims, and is not a substitute for major medical coverage.
