Commercial Auto Insurance
If a vehicle earns money, a personal auto policy is the wrong policy. The exclusion is explicit, and it is discovered at claim time far more often than at purchase time.
- Higher liability limits than personal policies typically offer
- Hired and non-owned auto coverage for employee vehicles
- Coverage for tools and equipment carried in the vehicle

What a commercial auto insurance policy actually does
-
Commercial liability
Bodily injury and property damage you cause while operating a business vehicle, at limits appropriate to commercial exposure.
-
Physical damage
Collision and comprehensive on your own vehicles, including specialised bodies and permanently attached equipment.
-
Hired and non-owned auto
Covers vehicles you rent, and employee-owned vehicles used for business errands. The gap this fills is one most owners do not know exists.
-
Uninsured motorist
Injuries to you and your employees caused by drivers without adequate coverage.
-
Cargo and equipment
Goods and tools carried in the vehicle, which physical damage coverage on the vehicle itself does not include.
-
Trailer coverage
Owned and hired trailers, rated separately from the power unit.
-
Personal use by non-listed drivers
Coverage follows the drivers and use described on the policy. Undisclosed drivers create claim disputes.
-
Wear and mechanical breakdown
Maintenance, as on any auto policy.
Commercial Auto Insurance questions
When does a personal policy stop working?
As soon as the vehicle is used to deliver, haul for pay, transport people commercially, or carry commercial tools regularly. Some personal policies also exclude vehicles titled to a business entity.
Does the business need to own the vehicle?
No. Coverage can be written for vehicles owned personally but used in the business, and hired and non-owned coverage handles the rest.
How are commercial rates set?
Vehicle type and weight, radius of operation, cargo, driver records, and claim history. Radius and cargo often move the price more than the vehicle itself.
Do I need a DOT filing?
Depends on weight, interstate operation, and what you carry. If a filing is required, it is submitted as part of issuing the policy.
