Mexican Auto Insurance

Your U.S. auto policy is not recognised by Mexican authorities. Driving in Mexico requires liability coverage written by a Mexican insurer. This is a legal requirement, not a recommendation.

  • Liability written by a Mexican insurer, as the law requires
  • Daily, trip-length, or annual terms
  • Legal assistance and bail bond coverage included on most policies

Mexican Auto Insurance questions

Does my U.S. policy extend into Mexico at all?

Some U.S. policies extend physical damage a short distance past the border. None of them satisfy Mexico's liability requirement, which is the part that matters legally.

How far in advance do I need it?

It can usually be issued the same day, including for a trip starting tomorrow. Doing it before you reach the border is simpler than doing it at one.

Is a daily policy cheaper than an annual one?

For a single short trip, yes. If you cross more than a couple of times a year, an annual policy is usually the better value.

What if I am towing a trailer or boat?

It must be declared and covered separately on the policy. An undeclared trailer is not covered.
