Rideshare Insurance
There is a window where your personal policy has stopped covering you and the rideshare platform has not started. That window is called Period 1, and without an endorsement it is uninsured.
- Covers the app-on, no-passenger gap the platform leaves thin
- Keeps your personal policy from being voided for undisclosed use
- Usually a modest endorsement rather than a separate policy

What a rideshare insurance policy actually does
-
Period 1: app on, waiting
Driving with the app on and no ride accepted. Platforms provide only limited liability here and no coverage for your own vehicle. Personal policies exclude it. This is the gap.
-
Period 2: en route to pick up
Platform coverage is substantially better here, but your deductible and any gaps in physical damage still land on you.
-
Period 3: passenger in the vehicle
Platform coverage is at its strongest. Deductibles remain high and the endorsement can reduce what you actually pay.
-
Delivery use
Food and package delivery is treated differently again by many carriers and is not automatically included in a rideshare endorsement.
-
Personal use
Your normal personal coverage continues unchanged when the app is off.
-
Driving without disclosing rideshare use
A personal policy can be voided, and a claim denied, for undisclosed commercial use. This is the risk the endorsement is really guarding against.
-
Commercial livery beyond app-based rideshare
Traditional livery and chauffeur operations need commercial auto coverage.
Rideshare Insurance questions
Is the platform's insurance not enough?
Not on its own. It provides little in Period 1, and its deductibles in Periods 2 and 3 are typically far higher than a personal policy's, often $2,500 or more.
Will my insurer drop me for driving rideshare?
Some will if it is undisclosed and discovered. Disclosing it and adding the endorsement is both cheaper and safer than hoping the question never comes up.
Does it cover food delivery too?
Not always. Delivery is a separate classification for many carriers and needs to be specified. Confirm before assuming.
How much does the endorsement cost?
Usually a modest addition to the personal policy, far less than a commercial auto policy, and far less than one denied claim.
