Classic Car Insurance
A standard auto policy pays actual cash value, which for a 1968 restoration means a number from a depreciation table. A classic policy agrees the value up front instead.
- Agreed value settled at policy issue, not after a loss
- Mileage and usage terms built for a car that is driven occasionally
- Coverage for restoration work in progress

What a classic car insurance policy actually does
-
Agreed value
You and the insurer agree the vehicle's value when the policy is written. After a total loss that is the number paid, with no depreciation argument.
-
Spare parts
Parts and components stored for the vehicle, which a standard auto policy generally will not cover.
-
Restoration in progress
Coverage that increases as the build progresses, so a partially finished car is not underinsured at the point it is most vulnerable.
-
Limited-use terms
Premiums reflect the low annual mileage typical of a collector vehicle, which is a large part of why the coverage costs what it does.
-
Trailer and transport
Damage in transit to shows and events, which is where a meaningful share of classic car claims actually happen.
-
Daily driving
Classic policies carry mileage and usage limits. A car used for commuting needs a standard auto policy.
-
Racing and timed events
Excluded, as on any personal auto policy.
Classic Car Insurance questions
How is agreed value set?
Usually from documented appraisals, comparable sales, and photographs of the vehicle's condition. Keeping that documentation current matters. Values move.
Are there storage requirements?
Commonly yes. Many carriers require an enclosed, locked structure, and some ask about security. The requirements are in the policy and are worth reading before a claim tests them.
Does the car have to be a certain age?
It varies. Some carriers use a fixed age threshold, others assess the vehicle's collector status. Modified and specialty vehicles are frequently eligible even when they are not old.
Can I still drive it to shows?
Yes. That is the expected use. What is restricted is routine daily driving, and the specific mileage allowance is stated in the policy.
