Dental Insurance
Most medical plans exclude routine dental care entirely. A standalone plan covers the preventive work and blunts the cost of the work you hope not to need.
- Preventive care usually covered at or near 100%
- Waiting periods and annual maximums explained before you enroll
- Network checked against your current dentist

What a dental insurance policy actually does
-
Preventive care
Cleanings, exams, and routine x-rays, typically covered fully and often without applying to the deductible.
-
Basic procedures
Fillings, simple extractions, and basic restorative work, commonly at a shared percentage after a deductible.
-
Major procedures
Crowns, bridges, dentures, and root canals, usually at a lower percentage and often after a waiting period.
-
Orthodontics
Available on some plans, generally with a separate lifetime maximum and frequently limited to dependants.
-
Annual maximum
The cap on what the plan pays in a year. This is the number that determines whether a plan helps with major work or only with cleanings.
-
Cosmetic dentistry
Whitening and veneers for appearance are excluded from essentially every dental plan.
-
Work already in progress
Treatment started before the plan began is generally not covered.
Dental Insurance questions
Are there waiting periods?
Usually. Preventive care often starts immediately, basic work after a few months, and major work after six to twelve months. Plans that waive waiting periods typically cost more.
What is a reasonable annual maximum?
Common maximums run from $1,000 to $2,500. Since a single crown can consume most of a low maximum, this number matters more than the premium on plans you expect to use.
Can I keep my dentist?
Only if they are in network, or if the plan pays out-of-network benefits at a reduced rate. Confirm with the practice before enrolling, not after.
Is a discount plan the same as insurance?
No. A discount plan negotiates reduced fees you pay yourself; it never reimburses. That can still be worthwhile, but it is a different product.
