Motorcycle Insurance
A motorcycle policy is not a car policy with a smaller premium. The coverages that matter most (custom parts, gear, and guest passenger liability) do not exist on an auto policy at all.
- Custom parts and accessories covered to a real limit
- Riding gear coverage that most auto policies have no equivalent for
- Seasonal and lay-up options if the bike is stored part of the year

What a motorcycle insurance policy actually does
-
Liability
Injuries and property damage you cause to others. Required in most states, and the limit deserves the same scrutiny as an auto policy.
-
Collision and comprehensive
Damage to your own bike from an impact, and from theft, fire, or weather. Motorcycles are stolen at a far higher rate than cars, which makes comprehensive more valuable than riders expect.
-
Custom parts and accessories
Exhaust, seats, bags, chrome, and anything else added after it left the factory. Standard limits are low; if you have invested in the bike, this limit needs raising deliberately.
-
Riding gear
Helmet, jacket, gloves, and boots damaged in a covered accident. A full set of quality gear runs into four figures and is not covered by an auto policy.
-
Uninsured and underinsured motorist
For a rider, this is critical. Motorcycle injuries are more severe, and if the at-fault driver carries a minimum limit it will not go far.
-
Guest passenger liability
Covers injuries to a passenger on your bike. Not automatically included on every policy, worth confirming rather than assuming.
-
Track days and racing
Competitive and timed events are excluded from standard policies. Track coverage is a separate product.
-
Wear on consumables
Tyres, chains, and brake pads are maintenance, not insurable loss.
Motorcycle Insurance questions
Can I suspend coverage over the winter?
Some carriers offer lay-up or seasonal options that reduce liability charges while keeping comprehensive in force. Dropping coverage entirely is riskier: theft and fire do not stop in January, and a coverage gap raises your next premium.
Does my licence endorsement affect the price?
Yes. A proper motorcycle endorsement and a completed rider safety course both tend to reduce premium, and some carriers require the endorsement to write the policy at all.
Are my accessories automatically covered?
Only up to a low default limit, often around $3,000 and sometimes less. If you have spent more than that on parts, the limit needs raising explicitly.
Does engine size change the rate?
Usually. Displacement, bike type, and theft rates for that specific model all feed into pricing: a sport bike and a cruiser with similar values can price very differently.
